Considering the intersections of the fields of Communication and Education from the perspective of Communication and its theoretical and epistemological construction, a bibliographic review was conducted using CAPES journal database. Articles with titles containing the main terms used to refer to media literacy were sought, aiming to understand how these terms are applied, their theoretical foundations, the methodological procedures used in the research, and their connections with reception studies. The main findings reveal the use of different terminologies, often without theoretical justification and treated as synonyms; the predominance of international authors in the conceptual framework; and the prevalence of bibliographic research and case studies as the main methodological approaches.
Egle Muller Spinelli Isabela Afonso Portas Copyright (c) 2025 Egle Muller Spinelli, Isabela Afonso Portas https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0 2025-06-19 2025-06-19 28 1 65 85 10.29146/eco-ps.v28i1.28477 Alfabetização midiática https://ecopos.emnuvens.com.br/eco_pos/article/view/28459
This article aims to conduct a systematic literature review (SLR) of works published from 2016 to 02/07/2025 on Media Literacy (ML). The analyses highlight the following focuses of the studies: the importance for teacher training, conscious media consumption, combating misinformation, the exercise of citizenship, and a feminist reading of the media. Additionally, the terms ML and media and information literacy (MIL) are used with nearly similar meanings to encompass all dimensions of media. However, algorithmic mediation demands new competencies, particularly in media and algorithmic literacy. This theoretical essay proposes a reflection on how intelligent agents transform the role of researchers, shifting research from a model based on active source selection to a system curated by opaque algorithms. It argues that the development of media and algorithmic literacy is essential for the critical use of these tools. We used as a case study the work carried out in the discipline “Media literacy and the management of media knowledge: from consumer to citizen”, taught to students of the Postgraduate Program in Communication at the São Paulo State University “Júlio de Mesquita Filho” (Unesp), Bauru-SP campus. The proposal is considered relevant because it is in its second year of application, presenting favorable results, linking the issue of media literacy to extension practices in postgraduate teaching. The methodological path starts from participatory research, in an action-reflection approach, in addition to bibliographical research on media literacy. The results highlighted that the curricularization of extension should not be limited to the existence of subjects, but also contribute to new teaching-learning procedures in higher education, bringing to light reflections on the social impact promoted by actions carried out in postgraduate studies.

Keywords: Communication; Curriculum; Extension; Media literacy; Postgraduate.
Roseane Andrelo Aline Lisboa Copyright (c) 2025 Roseane Andrelo, Aline Lisboa https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0 2025-06-19 2025-06-19 28 1 133 156 10.29146/eco-ps.v28i1.28440 Trends in Socioenvironmental Educommunication https://ecopos.emnuvens.com.br/eco_pos/article/view/28461
This article aims to identify the most recent trends in social intervention practices in Socioenvironmental Educommunication and the conceptual contributions from reports produced about them. Although Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's third term created a structure to address this area, it cannot yet be said that Brazil has a consolidated national public policy for media education. Then I analyze the implications of this concept for Black gay men through Rico Dalasam’s song Última Vez (Last Time), in dialogue with the theoretical discussion and the notion of double bind in the context of racial relations in Brazil. Ultimately, I emphasize Black loneliness as a contradictory dynamic of both attraction and repulsion which reproduces racialized gender asymmetries between homosexual interracial couples.
Lucianna Furtado Copyright (c) 2025 Lucianna Furtado https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0 2025-06-19 2025-06-19 28 1 427 447 10.29146/eco-ps.v28i1.28172 Anti-racist and Decolonial Journalism in Brazil https://ecopos.emnuvens.com.br/eco_pos/article/view/28154
In this article we reflect upon the theoretical and empirical elements of an anti-racist and decolonial journalism, with a theoretical study followed by an interpretative analysis of the editorial lines and news stories on the same facts published by Folha de S. Após a exposição desse cenário, a pesquisadora apresenta os estudos culturais latino-americanos trazendo as versões do Mapa de Martín-Barbero para, em seguida, esboçar o seu próprio, que não deseja superar o anterior e nem ser um modelo cristalizado, mas um desenho vivo para lidar com o atual cenário digital.
Gabriel Bhering Copyright (c) 2025 Gabriel Bhering https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0 2025-06-19 2025-06-19 28 1 603 610 10.29146/eco-ps.v28i1.28444 Sociability in metrics https://ecopos.emnuvens.com.br/eco_pos/article/view/28399
This review of the book Recognition in the Age of Social Media, by Bruno Campanella (2024), attempts to bring together the main points defended by the author about the problem of how social media and their algorithms function in contemporary forms of recognition and identification. Starting with a historical overview at research into the role of media in the constitution of habitus, the author discusses his own concepts of datafied habitus and datafied recognition – conditions inherent to the relationships and interactions built with and on digital social media. Campanella challenges us to think beyond the potential of our communicational objects, not disregarding the lenses of the structural functioning of digital media and their governance.
Daniela Borges de Oliveira Copyright (c) 2025 Daniela Borges de Oliveira https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0 2025-06-19 2025-06-19 28 1 611 619 10.29146/eco-ps.v28i1.28399 Alfabetização midiática, midiativismo e a escuta do Sul Global: entrevista com Andrea Medrado https://ecopos.emnuvens.com.br/eco_pos/article/view/28479
Professor Andrea Medrado is the Director of Research in Communication and an Associate Professor at the University of Exeter, in the United Kingdom. She is also an Adjunct Professor at the Universidade Federal Fluminense(UFF), in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where she is currently on unpaid leave. Her most recent book, Media Activism, Artivism and the Fight Against Marginalisation in the Global South: South-to-South Communication, co-authored with Isabella Rega, received the ICA Outstanding Book Award 2024 and has contributed to innovative debates on the relationship between media literacy and social activism. In this interview with Revista Eco-Pós, she discusses the relevance of media literacy in the context of the Global South and the power of artivism—artistic practices associated with activism—as an instrument to combat structural inequalities in access to and production of knowledge. She also reflects on the importance of data protection and security literacy in connection with media literacy, as well as the integration of teaching, research, and extension in universities for social transformation.
Beatriz Goes Copyright (c) 2025 Beatriz Goes https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0 2025-06-19 2025-06-19 28 1 360 379 10.29146/eco-ps.v28i1.28479 BIG TECHS AND DISINFORMATION: INTERVIEW WITH MARIE SANTINI https://ecopos.emnuvens.com.br/eco_pos/article/view/28478
Rose Marie Santini is one of Brazil's leading experts in Internet Studies and Social Networks, recognized by prestigious international organizations. She is an Associate Professor at the School of Communication at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (ECO-UFRJ) and the founder and director of the NetLab Laboratory. According to Santini, the internet, the lack of transparency in big tech protocols, and the actions of far-right groups in spreading hate speech in digital environments play a central role in exacerbating misinformation phenomena. She acknowledges media literacy as essential in combating misinformation. However, she emphasizes that media education should focus more on literacy, platform usage, and understanding their business models rather than on specific content and sources. In this interview, she highlights that, despite the importance of mass media in agenda-setting for news, understanding the contemporary media landscape requires grasping the dynamics of persuasion on social networks that mobilize public opinion.
André Luís Pires Pelliccione Copyright (c) 2025 André Luís Pires Pelliccione https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0 2025-06-19 2025-06-19 28 1 380 400 10.29146/eco-ps.v28i1.28478
