Abstract

This review of the book Recognition in the Age of Social Media, by Bruno Campanella (2024), attempts to bring together the main points defended by the author about the problem of how social media and their algorithms function in contemporary forms of recognition and identification. Starting with a historical overview at research into the role of media in the constitution of habitus, the author discusses his own concepts of datafied habitus and datafied recognition – conditions inherent to the relationships and interactions built with and on digital social media. Campanella challenges us to think beyond the potential of our communicational objects, not disregarding the lenses of the structural functioning of digital media and their governance.
