Abstract

Rose Marie Santini is one of Brazil's leading experts in Internet Studies and Social Networks, recognized by prestigious international organizations. She is an Associate Professor at the School of Communication at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (ECO-UFRJ) and the founder and director of the NetLab Laboratory. According to Santini, the internet, the lack of transparency in big tech protocols, and the actions of far-right groups in spreading hate speech in digital environments play a central role in exacerbating misinformation phenomena. She acknowledges media literacy as essential in combating misinformation. However, she emphasizes that media education should focus more on literacy, platform usage, and understanding their business models rather than on specific content and sources. In this interview, she highlights that, despite the importance of mass media in agenda-setting for news, understanding the contemporary media landscape requires grasping the dynamics of persuasion on social networks that mobilize public opinion.
