Abstract

This lecture by Richard Dyer took place on May 13, 2025, during the extension course “Art in the Party, the Party in Art”, taught by Professor Denilson Lopes at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC) of the University of São Paulo (USP). During the event, the emeritus professor of Film Studies at King’s College London revisited his seminal text “In Defense of Disco”, originally published in 1979 in issue number eight of the British socialist magazine Gay Left. In a conversational format interspersed with audience questions, Dyer speaks forty years later about the shock that led him to write the text, his experience of going to nightclubs, and his involvement with leftist gay politics in the early 1980s.
