Abstract

In the introduction to Desidentifications: Queers of Color and the Performance of Politics, José Esteban Muñoz defines “disidentification” as a gesture of openness toward a queer way of life. Through the performance of artist Marga Gomez, the Cuban American author constructs an engaged dialogue with his own memory since emigrating to Miami. From Marga’s bed, Muñoz turns Marlon Riggs’s tongues into an encounter between Capote, Warhol, and Basquiat, without treating feminist theorists such as Lonie, Barbara Smith, Anzaldúa, and Moraga as divas. Within the panorama of identities-in-difference, disidentification is part of a desire to expand in community and through what differentiates us.
