Abstract

Professor Andrea Medrado is the Director of Research in Communication and an Associate Professor at the University of Exeter, in the United Kingdom. She is also an Adjunct Professor at the Universidade Federal Fluminense(UFF), in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where she is currently on unpaid leave. Her most recent book, Media Activism, Artivism and the Fight Against Marginalisation in the Global South: South-to-South Communication, co-authored with Isabella Rega, received the ICA Outstanding Book Award 2024 and has contributed to innovative debates on the relationship between media literacy and social activism. In this interview with Revista Eco-Pós, she discusses the relevance of media literacy in the context of the Global South and the power of artivism—artistic practices associated with activism—as an instrument to combat structural inequalities in access to and production of knowledge. She also reflects on the importance of data protection and security literacy in connection with media literacy, as well as the integration of teaching, research, and extension in universities for social transformation.
